Hair care routine | the secrets to healthy hair

When it comes to hair care, I do not mess around.

There is nothing quite like a good hair day, and nothing worse than a bad one. So today's post in #MathkarBlogs is about tips for healthy hair & my #haircare routine.

Fun fact: when i was a kid I had porcupine like hair.. yeah literally my hair were like thorns sticking out of my head. It was much like a hair brush; dry & rough. And then there was that time when my hair decided to randomly turn smooth & strong during college.

Since then I’ve been really blessed in the hair department. When it comes to hair, although genes do play a big role; hair care routine, tips and products can make a HUGE difference!

So today, I’ll be sharing all of my tips and my hair care routine for healthy hair.

The Hair Care Routine

As always this routine is for EVERYONE! These are things that I follow on regular basis & have worked pretty good for my hair! To give you an idea – my hair is thick, pretty smooth and kind of straight. If you have totally different hair, I would recommend looking into the different kinds of products which will work for you & get the desired results. I have also listed all the products which I use in my hair care routine.

So let’s get into it :)

1. Oil Massage

Gone are the days when one could sit back and enjoy a good champi from grandma. That was a special treat indeed! Hair oiling is a sure shot way of ensuring that our hair remains strong and free from damage. It is perhaps the best thing we can do to our hair. In the long run, this practice is your key to healthier and stronger hair. Since the ancient times, oiling has been used as a means to enhance hair health. It gives your hair strength, relieves your scalp of bacterial and fungal infections and prevents your hair from premature greying. And there are many more benefits of oiling your hair regularly.

You need not keep the oil over night; 2 hours before shower is good enough. Oil at least once a week.

  1. Simply take enough coconut oil / almond oil and warm it slightly.

  2. Apply this oil on your scalp and massage it with your fingers in circular motions with light pressure.

  3. Doing this regularly will strengthen the roots of the hair and nourish the hair thus preventing breakage.

2. Hair Wash Routine -

Choosing the right type of shampoo & conditioner for your hair type is the real game changer in hair care. Staying in Metro cities, you are exposed to pollution, dust & dirt. Considering the Monsoon will set in soon; Hair tends to become greasy and oily. It is advisable to wash your hair daily to keep your scalp healthy and clean, free from any dirt, residue, pollution and oil. If you gym or workout then you should wash your hair post workout too; I do the same! Make sure you use mild, sulphate & paraben free shampoo. Always wash your hair with cold or lukewarm water as it helps prevent drying out of hair. Never run hot water over your hair; it damages them severely. Depending on your hair type & the shampoo you use; either you can shampoo + condition or just shampoo.

3. Take a break from heat -

Go all-natural when you can to dry your hair. I also do blow dry sometimes, but taking a break from heat is the key to maintaining healthy hair! One of my favourite tricks for no heat days is to let my hair air dry. Just pat it with your towel & let it dry on its own. Again depending on the hair type you can use a leave on Hair serum; I personally avoid it.

I believe the less products you use, the healthier the hair would be.

4. Use Right Comb -

The best way to protect your hair from damage post wash is to use a wide tooth-comb or a hair brush. It detangles easily preventing any hair breakage. Not only picking up right comb is essential but also to comb your hair the right way is equally important. Never comb your hair when they are very wet; always pat dry first, wait for five- ten minutes & then comb. Also, avoid sharing your comb with others to prevent dandruff & other issues.

5. Protect your Hair from Sun / Rain -

Ensure your hair is always covered when you are out in the hot sun or in the pouring rains during monsoon. Your hair needs protection from heat, dirt, dust or dirty acidic rainwater too as it can cause hair damage and increases the probability of hair fall, dandruff, split ends etc.

You can protect your hair with a head cap, cover it with a bandana or even an umbrella.

6. Eat right -

Hair loss can be an outcome of nutrients deficiency caused due to poor eating habits. You can improve the condition of your hair by including the right food in the right amount in your diet. The three main nutrients needed for well-being of your hair are omega 3 fatty acids, protein and iron. Eat foods that are rich in above-mentioned nutrients to strengthen the hair follicles. It is also necessary to keep yourself hydrated for better nourishment of your hair. Drink enough water and eat right food to make your hair strong and healthy from within.

7. Don’t skip the haircuts -

I cannot stress how important this is! I think a lot of people skip on haircuts thinking it will help their hair grow longer, when really it does the opposite. Trimming your hair will not only help you keep it manageable but also healthy and strong! This is key in the long run for hair care.

8. Minimize the styling & products -

Some days when I have to attend an event or on any occasions, obviously I need to style my hair with heat & products. Try to keep it to the minimum; do not use heavy hair styling gels / sprays on regular basis as they are loaded with number of chemicals which are going to damage your hair in the long run. Also do not forget to wash your hair thoroughly before going to bed; you don’t want those products to be their whole night long.

9. Invest in quality products + tools -

Quality products make all the difference in the world! It is also really important to invest in quality tools that will keep your hair safe and not damage or dry it out. While choosing all the products & tools you will use on your hair do invest in good brands having quality value.

10. Exercise – Meditate - Sleep -

Just like eating right food; exercising regularly, meditating & getting 7 hours sleep is also important to have good hair. It is all inter related; when you have a healthy body, it definitely shows on your skin & hair. You can try the Head-stand yoga asan ie. inversion method which is also one of the best methods to increase blood flow to the scalp which helps promote healthy hair & scalp.
